Last Friday night, Matt Bennett, famous for his role in the Nickelodeon show, Victorious, where he portrayed Robbie Shapiro, brought his highly anticipated iParty to The Fillmore.
At iParty, Bennett travels the country bringing nothing but pure nostalgia to fans of Disney and Nickelodeon from the early 2000’s. Bennett serves as a DJ where he plays songs from iconic TV shows and movies such as iCarly, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, and Victorious. He also brings his pal, Jeffery the DJ, along with him as an opening act to pump up the crowd for Bennett’s set.
Jeffery plays throwback music from the average college students’ childhood. He kicked off the night with Bridgit Mendler’s 2013 hit, "Ready or Not". The crowd was pumped and ready for a fun night ahead. However, he was mistaken for Bennett when he first came on stage by the crowd.
“Robbie, Robbie, Robbie!” The crowd chanted as he walked on stage.
Jeffery’s response was “I’m not Robbie, my name is Jeffery.”
Over the course of Jeffery’s time, a majority of his set consisted of songs from Disney Channel shows and films. He even played the song from the rap battle scene from the Disney Channel Original Movie, Let it Shine, because it reminded him of Detroit’s very own Eminem.
“I never really play this song, but I thought I would, because we are in Detroit, and Eminem is from Detroit, and this song reminds me of Eminem”, Jeffery told the crowd.
One of the most successful parts of his set was a medley of TV theme songs from shows such as Hannah Montana, Good Luck Charlie, Wizards of Waverly Place, That’s So Raven, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. That portion of his set closed out with the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song, where the crowd erupted and participated with the songs calls and responses.
Jeffery also invited members of the crowd on stage to help him out with some of the famous dances from back in the day. Audience members were up beside him during “The Hoedown Throwdown”, from Hannah Montana: The Movie, and “We’re All in This Together”, from High School Musical. Jeffery’s set concluded with “She’s So Gone” from the Disney Channel original movie, Lemonade Mouth.
Next, it was Matt Bennett’s turn on set, and it was the moment everyone was waiting for. He began his set with “Best Friend's Brother", a hit song from Victorious. Throughout the song he had the whole crowd jumping up and down as one whole unit.
In addition to playing music from 2000s shows like Jeffery, Bennett also played music by artists who have contributed to Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, but have released albums of their own. Music in this section of the show included “Year 3000” by The Jonas Brothers, as well as “Who Says” and “Love You Like a Love Song”, by Selena Gomez and “Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus.
The crowd had an amazing time dancing to songs that were a huge part of their childhood. Since Bennett starred in a Nickelodeon show, most of his set consisted of songs from shows that were also on that network. A few songs from his show, “Make it Shine” and “Song 2 You” were truly magical moments.
The night concluded with “What Dreams are Made Of.” From The Lizzie McGuire Movie and “Determinate" from Lemonade Mouth. For the final song, Bennett joined the crowd and danced with everyone which made it such a special night.
At the end of the night, it was great for everyone to feel like a kid again and relive what has raised into what they are today.
