The man you see to my left, is a very talented individual. Kyle Purgaric -bassist supreme- was an interesting guy to talk to and interview. While our conversation was somewhat short, it was indeed meaningful and insightful into his mind and his views of music. A senior with an interdisciplinary studies major and a minor in music tech.; Kyle is well versed in the art and craft of music. From the ripe young years in middle school, he played the trombone but never fully fleshed out his progress on it (tis a shame). Highschool was when he found out that the bass would be his glorious instrument to flaunt to the masses. Besides his wonder instrument of the bass, he strums the electric guitar from time to time, hits the keys on the piano occasionally, and knows how to keep a steady beat on the drums. Big into metal, Kyle takes heavy inspiration and fervor from King Crimson and Opeth among several others that he loves and covers.
Onto his musical life, Kyle has been in several different bands (most of which have disbanded as of late) and is currently in one now who covers various types of metal music. Name still to be determined, the band consists of mutual friends among other friends who like to vibe out in jam sessions together. Kyle also makes his own music and has his own YouTube channel where he posts his new inventions in music. At WXOU's Harvest Fest this year, Kyle performed with Aniya Gray's band. Meeting the rest of the band came through Aniya, and he said that he had a great time, even though the music was not what he's used to. He calls it a "valuable experience," because he got to be versatile in genres and got to explore different types of music. Prior to that event, he had never been in a concert or performance with audio tech. or anything of that sort, but nevertheless it was a welcome change.
In speaking, we got into quite a few discussions of top artists, top songs, and even video games (I know, completely off topic but it was worth it). The first six that he named were, again, King Crimson and Opeth, and Primus, Rush, and finally on a heavier side, Korn and Slipknot. He also enjoys classical, jazz, and rock music (again, a good variety of artists to add to your playlists and give a listen to). Next, we got to top 5 songs: an even harder question than the last. He gave by name, Continuum, a Russian song that neither of us can pronounce from the band Molchat Doma, A Work of Art, The Heaviest Matter of the Universe, The Halo Theme: Halo Combat Evolved, and Keepers of the Gate: Dusk. In talking about video games, he stated that his favorite Halo game is Halo: Combat Evolved. May be controversial among the Halo community, but a good pick, nonetheless. He's also played a good amount of the Fallout series of games as well, labeling New Vegas as his favorite among the games.
A couple of performances are lined up for Kyle this year, but school related ones. His African Ensemble concert is coming up on the 22nd of November, and he's also performing with the creative jazz ensemble the same week. Make sure you go and support your fellow musicians in their performances!!
