Meet Nathan Katzenberger (AKA DJ Katz), host of Under the Radar which broadcasts weekly on Thursdays at 3pm.
What is your name?
Nathan Katzenberger
What is your year and major?
Senior/Communications major, Political Science minor
Show and time-slot?
Under the Radar/Thursdays 3-4
Who is your favorite artist?
Talking Heads
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I volunteer at a non-profit called the Bottomless Toy Chest. We give toys to pediatric cancer patients in hospitals in an effort to brighten their treatment process.
Did you have any broadcast experience before WXOU?
No, I have never had any radio broadcast experience before WXOU.
What drew you to start a show on WXOU?
I started Under the Radar pretty much on a whim; I thought I would love doing it every week and I definitely do! I would say my parents were a big part of the reason I started as well, they encouraged me when the show was just an idea.
Describe your show, Under the Radar, in one sentence:
A journey through an underrated discography that attempts to help viewers find their next favorite artist.
Do you have a dream guest for your show?
My friend Radek would be my dream guest because he is truly in the musical underground. He’ll recommend artists to me that have around 10 fans from a genre I’ve never heard of. The diamonds in the rough he has already found me have helped me produce so many shows, I’m sure if he was a guest his musical knowledge would inspire so many more discography deep dives.
Pick five songs that represent you, DJ Katz:
This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
Only a Fool - Steely Dan
Is It A Crime - Sade
Red and Gold - MF DOOM
King of Silence - Cibo Matto
Who is your go-to ”undiscovered” artist to show new people?
Probably Cibo Matto, no one has ever heard of them and I love their entire discography! Stereo Type A is my favorite album by them and I always recommend it as a starting point, it’s an hour of feel-good tunes.
If you had one thing to say to the entire world what would it be?
I guess I would say that I appreciate and love all of my listeners and that if any of you wonderful people have any suggestions please let me know! I would love to listen to anything and everything that you guys recommend! I hope you’ll continue to support me! Thanks for tuning in! You can listen to DJ Katz’ show, Under the Radar at wxou.org/live, along with the rest of our student-led programming! Thanks for supporting WXOU.
