ROCHESTER, Mich. – In a thrilling Horizon League matchup, Oakland University edged out Detroit Mercy 93-83 in an overtime showdown at the O’rena on Sunday afternoon. The Black Out game, where fans packed the nearly full arena dressed in black, provided an electric atmosphere for the intense contest.
The game tipped off at 3 p.m., with Detroit Mercy securing the initial possession. Oakland’s starting lineup featured players wearing numbers 7, 10, 11, 12, and 25. Detroit Mercy faced foul trouble early, which hampered their ability to maintain momentum against a resilient Oakland squad. By halftime, Oakland had managed to capitalize on free throws and turnovers, keeping the game close despite Detroit Mercy’s early lead.
Regulation time ended dramatically at 77-77 after Oakland drilled a clutch three-pointer with just five seconds remaining to force overtime. The shot sent the crowd into a frenzy, as the Golden Grizzlies refused to back down. Detroit Mercy won the overtime tip, but Oakland’s dominant play in the extra period secured their victory. The Golden Grizzlies outscored their rivals 16-6 in overtime, fueled by key defensive stops and fast-break points, to seal the 93-83 win.
The victory was particularly significant for Oakland’s head coach, Greg Kampe, who tied the Horizon League record with his 131st conference win. Kampe, a veteran coach with decades of experience, has been instrumental in shaping Oakland’s basketball program into a consistent contender.
With this win, Oakland University strengthens its standing in the Horizon League as the season heads into its final stretch. The team looks ahead to its next matchup, hoping to build on this momentum and further secure their position in the conference rankings.
