The Golden Grizzlies hosted the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons at the OU Credit Union O’rena in what was a Horizon League showdown.
The first set was highly contested from the get-go, with 7 ties up until both teams hit 11, where Purdue took command and created sizable space. It was short-lived, though, as Oakland came back and tied the set again at 15.
After another series of lead changes, Purdue got wind of the Golden Grizzlies' dismay after two Oakland timeouts. The Mastodons would take the set 25-22.
Another tough and close set followed, but the same result did not ensue. Oakland gained momentum later in the set and took it 25-22.
Oakland opened up with the first lead change in the third set in what looked to be an omen for visiting Purdue Fort Wayne. It wasn’t, however, as it was another set in which both teams stayed in close proximity to each other early. That was until Purdue Fort Wayne took a considerable lead and seemed to have the set won.
That didn’t occur, though. The Golden Grizzlies stormed back and took a considerable lead of their own. It truly became a set of runs. Deuce rules even came into effect, and the Mastodons took the set 26-24.
Oakland would go on to take the 4th set in a more-than-convincing fashion. The Golden Grizzlies closed out the visiting Mastodons within the set 25-10.
Much of the same Oakland dominance followed in what would be the last set due to the Golden Grizzlies' outstanding play. OU sent Purdue Fort Wayne home 3-2 after a 15-11 set.
Libby Gentile led the Golden Grizzlies with 19 kills.
Oakland will go on to host Northern Kentucky Friday, October 27th at 6 PM EST.
